VGM Calculator

Enter tare, cargo and packaging weights to calculate the verified gross mass (VGM) of your container.

What is VGM?

VGM (Verified Gross Mass) is the verified total weight of a packed container. Under SOLAS, in force since 1 July 2016, packed export containers need a VGM before they are loaded onto a vessel. The shipper is responsible.

Two methods

  1. Method 1: Weigh the packed container.
  2. Method 2: Weigh all cargo, packing and securing material, then add the container tare.

Formula

VGM = tare + cargo + packaging / dunnage / securing material

Example

  • Tare: 3,800 kg (marked on the container)
  • Cargo: 18,000 kg
  • Packaging and securing: 400 kg
  • VGM: 3,800 + 18,000 + 400 = 22,200 kg

Practical tip

Submit the VGM declaration before the shipping line's cut-off time; late containers may not be loaded.

The tare weight is marked on the container door, but if cargo weight is entered as net instead of gross, the VGM will be understated. Include every material such as pallets, straps, airbags and chocks. An incorrect declaration can delay loading or lead to the container being refused.
