What is LDM?
LDM (loading meter) is the length of trailer floor a shipment occupies. It is the basis of pricing in road groupage and full-load freight, especially for non-stackable goods.
Formula
LDM = (length m × width m) / 2.4
Calculate it per item; 2.4 m is the standard trailer width. A full standard trailer equals 13.6 LDM.
Example
- 4 EUR pallets, 1.2 × 0.8 m, non-stackable
- One pallet: (1.2 × 0.8) / 2.4 = 0.4 LDM
- Total: 4 × 0.4 = 1.6 LDM
Converting to weight
Carriers convert LDM into a chargeable weight with their own factor, often around 1,750–1,850 kg per LDM, and it varies by carrier. For example, at 1,800 kg per LDM, 1.6 LDM equals 2,880 kg.
When items do not sit side by side or the full trailer width cannot be used, the real length occupied can be larger than the calculated value. Stackable cargo lowers the LDM, so clarify with the carrier whether your goods may be stacked.
